A Little Cooking Know-How
Here’s some “Cooking 101″ for you. Anyone who can follow directions, knows a little math, and has some common sense can learn to cook, and possibly put together a fairly decent meal the very first time. Sure it may not look straight from Betty Crocker, but it will taste fairly well, and not poison anyone! First you will need basic things every kitchen should have.
For basic cooking you will need some pots, pans, and utensils. Every cook needs these items. While there is some equipment that goes for thousands of dollars, you can start with the basics. No matter what type of cookware you choose, make sure it has non-stick surfaces. This includes any cookie sheets and baking pans you choose. This makes clean-up and use much easier. Remember, the better the quality of the cookware, the easier the food will come off the surface.
Cooking also require utensils like measuring cups, and spoons, knives, and whisks. It may also be a good idea to buy a basic mixing bowl set, metal is easier to clean and maintain. You will need to also buy plastic and metal spatulas, larger spoons and forks. You will also need two basic can openers, one that removes the inner lid for draining things like tuna, but also the safe one that removes the whole top with now rough edges.
Cooking 101 also includes basic staples that you will need every day, in many common cooking situations. You will need basic spices, like salt a pepper, but also things like Oregano, Cinnamon, Garlic, as well as others. You can find many basic sets at kitchen supply stores, or even with some mass marketing retailers.
You will also want to stock your pantry with baking soda, baking powder, cooking oil, light brown sugar, flour, and sugar. You can find complete lists of items needed for cooking basics online. You can use these same websites to find some basic recipes, but remember to start off small. You can also order some great cook books online that will be very helpful.
You’ll find that cooking charts are very helpful. They can be used as a quick reference to find out the temperature you need to cook meats and poultry at as well as how long to cook them. These charts also include other useful facts. You will find charts that provide detailed measurements for weight, volume, etc. You can find useful charts online that can be downloaded and printed. Precise measurement is important to the quality and taste of the food you prepare.
It is a good idea in cooking to get yourself a binder, to keep all of this information in one place. If you get one that will accept picture pages, you can include recipes you find from a variety of sources, online, at home, and even from friends and family. If you take good care if it, you could even pass it on to your kids.
You can find basic cooking tips at your neighborhood library, online, and at local retailers. Most community colleges offer cooking classes, from beginners to advanced. There are cooking career opportunities available that may interest those who begin to truly love the process of cooking.
