Cleaning and Replacing the Humidifier Filter
A humidifier replacement filter is easy to install. New models are becoming more and more user friendly so the entire process of taking apart and reassembling the unit is pretty straight forward. Changing the filter is usually a good time to also perform some general cleaning.
The frequency of change depends on how much the unit is used. The filter is ready for a change whenever there is visible build up of dust and pollutants. If there is nothing visible the filter still should be changed at least once a year to rid of invisible mold spores or bacteria that could be lurking in the filter.
The first thing to do before opening any electrical application is to unplug the unit from the power source. The next step is to remove the water tank or reservoir and empty it if necessary. Then refill it with cold water and add one tablespoon of household bleach to disinfect any mold or bacteria that could have developed in the sitting water. The bleach-water mix should sit at least 20 minutes.
Then proceed to remove the motor housing. It is the piece that covers the top of the humidifier. This is the opportunity to vacuum or wipe away any dust or dirt that might be on the humidifier. Do not take the unit apart any further than this because that would void the manufacturer warranty.
Now lift the filter out of the unit. Some models have filters that can be cleaned and reused. Since most replacement filters are economical, it is usually a good idea to simply use a new filter as it is the cleanest way to go. If you do choose to wash and reuse the filter be sure not to squeeze or wring it dry to avoid tearing the filter.
The humidifier should be reassembled just as easily as it was taken apart. Just remember where everything was taken from and put the parts back in place. But before that, take this opportunity to clean the base with a cup of white vinegar. Allow the vinegar to sit for 20 minutes before rinsing with the bleach water from the water tank. Ensure that everything is rinsed clean of all chemicals.
Changing the humidifier filter regularly is the best of ensuring optimal results when the unit is used. Those who wish to avoid the maintenance of changing filters can opt for a filter free humidifier.
