The magnet piece keeps the circuit closed when the door and windows are shut, which means that there is a voltage that flow in the circuit when the door or windows are closed but when the door or windows opened the circuit opened too, thus breaking the flow of voltage in the circuit causing the alarm to ring.
This home alarm system is monitored by a remote security agency or company. If there are any alerts, the agency or the security company will likely know which part of the house has been broken into. They then relay the information to the police or to their own security force to investigate the breach.
