How to Properly Pack Items for Winter Moves

Packing is one of the most essential elements of a successful move. During winter time it is even more important to properly pack your items, to protect them from getting harmed by water damage. Even if you are only moving a short distance away, there are some important things to remember when packing and moving during the winter months.

Keep the moisture off of your belongings during your move. Snow and rain can cause a huge amount of water damage. Even a little moisture can warp wood, ruin important documents, and cause mold.

Even if the weather reports give no chance of rain or snow, do not risk it. During the winter months there can be a lot more precipitation in the air than during the summer months. Take precautions to keep the moisture away from your boxes and possessions.

It is essential to have help when moving your larger, delicate items – such as a piano or flat screen TV. Professional movers are great help with moving these delicate possessions, because they are trained to keep them safe from moisture or other weather conditions. Even if you choose not to go with professionals, make sure you wrap all items in plastic to prevent water damage from happening on the trip outside.

The cold air can also affect items that are exposed to the cold weather. Be careful of anything liquid that can freeze and later expand. Carry house plants with you inside your car, and make sure the leaves stay away from the windows so they don’t freeze.

Covered moving trucks are best during winter moves. Professional trucks are large, covered, and made specifically for moves. Closed trucks give the added protection of not having to worry about snow or rain beating through and getting to your items.

If you choose to use an uncovered truck be sure to secure a tarp or covering over all of your belongings. Make sure it is waterproof and covers everything. It is important to have a tarp that is sturdy and won’t shred once you are on the road again.

Never travel with an uncovered pickup truck during snow or rain season. Weather can be unpredictable, even in the best conditions. A lot of damage can be done in a short amount of time, so don’t risk it with your belongings.
