It’s All About Canister Vacuums

by Dillon Cleanera

Vacuums have been around since the turn of the last century. Even after an entire century, the principle is the same: a few wheels, a handle, and a motor that sucks up dirt to be placed in a receptacle that can be emptied or discarded. The only major differences have been the basic styles: an upright, or a canister. Here will learn about canister vacuums.

After many decades of pulling and pushing much heavier upright machines, the canister style emerged as the popular choice in the 1950s. Housewives enjoy their ease of portability, especially when it came to either vacuuming staircases or just carrying the vacuums up and down stairs.

Their attachments and longer cords became a big hit as well. Women quickly took advantage of these options and figured out how to clean long neglected areas like ceilings, paintings, room corners, and even walls using attachments with soft flexible brushes.

Canisters could go places and do things that the uprights just couldn’t. It became easier to clean under heavy furniture rather than moving it. Corners could be cleaned. Any surface – hard wood, rugs, linoleum, and tile could all be vacuumed without worrying about scratches or the need for any type of pampering because attachments were made for any project that came about.

Companies took advantage of what the canister could do and what housewives expected it to do, and new companies did nothing but make attachments to suit every possible purpose for household cleaning. New attachments helped dad clean out the station wagon, and mom found a tiny attachment to use inside the fridge.

Cleaning the canister vacuum was as easy as it could get. Either a latch or a lever could be moved and the top would release. The bag was then removed and discarded. Later vacuum cleaner bags would come with closing tabs that could be placed over the hole in the bag so that dirt wouldn’t escape before ending up in the trash.

Because of the benefits of canister vacuums, they have remained popular even into the 21st century.
