Type 2 Diabetes And Exercise
Wieght plays a major part regarding the onset of type 2 diabetes. Most people when first diagnosed with the disease are obese.
This strongly suggests that those of us who are diabetic and overweight have an aversion to exercise.
Perhaps the good news is that exercising does not mean that you have to become a slave to the gym! The fact is, one of the reasons we don’t go to the gym is because we don’t want to show our perhaps flabby bodies in public!
The good news is that exercise does not have to be gym based. Simple walking is fine. Personally, I bought a copy of a large scale map of my area, and using a piece of string, mapped out a number of 2 mile walks. Every morning I choose one and go walking. I walk at a moderate pace and cover the distance in about 45 minutes.
The important bit here is the time, not the distance. It has been shown that walking for an extra 20 minutes a day, has a measurable effect on our health, particularly as diabetics.
If the garden needs tidying, great! Twenty minutes or more gardening is as good as a walk.
Bear in mind when considering how to exercise, aerobic exercise is what you want to be doing as a type 2 diabetic. Aerobic exercise is exercise with low impact and can be sustained without straining for longer periods than anaerobic, which are concentrated short bursts of energy.
The reason for doing this is this.
The liver has a certain amount of glucose stored in itself, which it releases as we exercise and use more glucose in the blood. This si the point about aerobic exercise, because you can keep it going, the extra glucose from the liver is used. Once used up, the body then starts to use fat. This is how we lose wieght and lower blood sugars when we exercise.
It’s not just wieght loss either. Other conditions are less likely when we exercise regularly, heart disease for example and bad cholesterol levels are reduced.
