Using Glass To Decorate Your Home

by Pauline Brenner

If you only see glass as that natural material used for bookshelves, windows, some tables and figurines, it’s worth getting to know a couple more things about this versatile material. You can then count yourself as one of the privileged few who are gifted with a special information that can make your home decorating better.

Firstly, glass does not have to be completely clear or colorless. It can be transparent while being colored almost any color you can think of, which of course means that it can be used to bring different kind of light to a room. You can use it in stained glass windows to create pictures that glow when the sun hits them, or just tint entire panes of glass a particular color, so that the room has a sunset glow all day, or appears to be permanently under water. Both inner doors and outer ones can be tinted, as can window panes in any part of the house.

Glass bricks can be used to allow light into various parts of a living space while maintaining a certain level of privacy, so if you have an open plan living space, you can use glass bricks to create a light space for a bathroom, or use them to divide the shower from the rest of the room. These bricks can also be tinted or stained so that a particular color theme is carried on with no lack of continuity.

Apart from its practical uses in terms of construction, glass can also be used with great versatility when it comes to both interior and exterior decoration. A large piece of glass can be blown with strips of color winding through it or objects caught inside it and these kinds of pieces can be used as anything from a paperweight to a freestanding piece of art, depending on their size. Glass can be cut to size and placed over a table to provide another exhibition space, if there are things you would like to display where they will constantly be seen but still need to be protected. If these objects are flat, the glass can be placed directly over a normal table, and if they are not, you will need a table with a recessed surface allowing space for whatever you wish to show off.

What better way to accent glass than with an area rug. An object made of glass and an area rug, particularly with a complementing color scheme is an immediate attention-drawer. This coordination gives a room a well-proportioned look – an indication of a well-thought out interior. If you or anyone thought so, then that is a great compliment for a decorating job well done.
