Where Are Occupational Therapy Jobs Performed?
Occupational therapy jobs may be described as one of the most challenging yet rewarding jobs around. Occupational therapists help patients who suffer either from mental, physical, developmental or emotional disabling conditions. They help patients improve their abilities to perform tasks or activities which have been impaired due to their health conditions.
The occupational therapy job is not necessarily limited in hospitals alone. Their duties may take them to their patients home, rehabilitation centers, mental health facilities, nursing homes, the workplace, and even in school.
Occupational therapy jobs are important in the lives of individuals suffering from any sort of disorder or disability, whether mental, physical or emotional. They are trained to take care of people with special needs. Different patients have different needs, which are why occupational therapists are trained to apply various kinds of methods suited for each type of patient, to help them heal from any trauma or disability they are suffering from.
The assistance may extend to their respective environments until patients are ready to perform their tasks independently. This helps the patient recover quicker.
The school setting is also an environment where occupational therapy jobs may be needed. Children with disabilities or impairments also need help while in school. The occupational therapist observes and evaluates the childs capabilities, recommends the type of therapy needed and provides therapy, right within the classroom set-up. Classroom equipment may be modified to be able to involve the child in school activities. In cases where there is more than one child in class that requires such help, the therapist may help the children individually or work with them as groups in the classroom.
Elderly patients, whether in a nursing home or in the privacy of their own homes, usually need the help of occupational therapists for them to be able to live more active, productive and independent lives. For such cases, the therapists recommendations may range from the use of adaptive equipment to go about daily tasks, to the use adaptive equipment to drive their cars, or even alternative transportation options to help them move around independently with ease. This is important if the patient wants to live as independently as possible.
Assessment of the patients home and environment for possible hazards and unfavorable conditions that may contribute to potential physical injuries is also a possibility. In other cases, patients who suffer from short-term memory or even Alzheimer’s may be engaged in activities to aid recall, such as making lists.
There are also instances where children with disabilities or impairments need to be helped in school. The occupational therapists role may be to evaluate the childs capabilities, recommend and provide therapy. They can also help modify classroom equipment to help the child participate in school activities. If there is more than one child in a class that needs help, the occupational therapist may opt to work with the children individually or lead small groups in the classroom.
Occupational therapy jobs are indeed challenging and varied. But one must admit that they are most important to patients as they strive to get back to living independent, productive and satisfying lives.
